What Goes Into Moving Costs

Moving costs are driven by three main factors: distance, volume, and services. Local moves are charged by the hour, while long-distance moves are priced by weight and mileage.

Local vs. Long Distance

A "local move" is typically defined as under 100 miles within the same state. Long-distance moves cross state lines or exceed 100 miles. The pricing model changes dramatically: local = hourly labor, long-distance = weight × distance + labor.

How to Save Money

Move mid-month (not month-end), choose weekdays over weekends, declutter before the move (less weight = lower cost), and get at least 3 in-home estimates before choosing a mover. Never accept a quote given over the phone without a visual assessment.

Cost Estimation

Local moves average 4-8 hours. Long-distance moves estimate 2,000 lbs per bedroom for weight calculations.

Local = Hours × Movers × Rate | Long-Distance = (Weight × Distance × Rate) + Base
